Will Hunt and Scorpio Motorsport will extend their relationship into a fourth season of the Radical SR1 Cup Championship.
The race-winning driver-team combination dates back to 2018 and Hunt’s first real-world test in a Formula 4 single-seater at Circuito de Albacete in Spain.
It was a successful debut and, having troubled the single-seater lap record at the Spanish racetrack, the West Sussex resident embarked on ahis first full season in the SR1 Cup.
Scorpio Motorsport has played an integral role in Hunt’s development as a racing driver since then, harnessing the raw speed he showed at Albacete and refining his abilities by providing comprehensive engineering support and direct, constructive feedback.
The Loughborough-based team’s input has enabled Hunt to convert his ‘Rookie Cup’ Champion status into podium finishes and, last year, outright race wins, and the next objective is to mount a sustained title challenge.
“I am extremely excited to be working with Jon (Pettit) and the team at Scorpio Motorsport for a fourth consecutive season in the Radical SR1 Cup,” said Hunt. “It feels like yesterday that I was putting in my first laps in the team’s F4 car, and we have come such a long way since then. The team has pushed me through obstacles and always given me a competitive package, and together we have learnt how to extract the maximum from our car. In 2019, James Fleuty joined the fold and made a significant contribution to my development using his experience of working with Michael Schumacher during his heyday at Scuderia Ferrari, as well as his expertise with tyre compounds.
“It is also great to be welcoming both John and Brian Caudwell from the Radical Challenge this season, as they have been super competitive in their Radical SR3s and will no doubt bring home some strong results for Scorpio Motorsport in the 2021 Radical SR1 Cup. It’s fair to say that, as a single-car team, we have been at a disadvantage in previous years. Now, we will be able to experiment with car setups and exchange feedback and ideas to maximise our chances in the races. As a team, there’s just one task left and that’s to win the Radical SR1 Cup outright. I have every faith that Scorpio Motorsport will be ready for the fight straight out of the starting blocks at Snetterton in April.”
Scorpio Motorsport Team Principal, Jon Pettit, added: “Will has developed immeasurably as a driver. With relatively little racing experience, Will has now put himself in a position where he understands how to win races and how to extract the best from himself and the car. There are always so many mistakes that can and need to be made in motorsport to reach the pinnacle of performance, and the key is to learn from those quickly and understand how not to repeat them. Will shows an aptitude to learn quickly, which produces consistent driving techniques and, consequently, results. Will understands the importance of delivering the complete package of preparation, presentation and performance, which puts him in a great position to become a brand ambassador for any future sponsor wanting to build their brand through the involvement of motorsport.”
The 2021 Radical SR1 Cup Championship commences with two races on the Snetterton ‘300’ circuit in East Anglia on 24 April and includes halts at Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Donington Park.
